  • Anxious

Xanax is the single most prescribed psychiatric drug in the United States; belong to the benzodiazepines group of drugs. A brand name of alprazolam, Xanax is generally prescribed for anxiety linked with depression, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. The drug is used to treat anxiety disorder and is available in various forms which include the extended-release tablets, tablets, disintegrating tablets and liquid forms. Alprazolam is also available in several generic types and the brand Xanax was approved in 1981 by the Food and Drug Administration and together with the extended-release tablets are manufactured by Pfizer. Jazz Pharmaceuticals produce the orally disintegrating tablets while Alprazolam Intensol the liquid form is made by West-Ward Pharmaceuticals.

How To Take Xanax-Blue Xanax Bar

The way Xanax is taken depends on the condition it is used for, the form being taken and your age. Your doctor is in the right position to decide how it should be taken, so Xanax should be used as recommended by your doctor. Depending on the prescription of your doctor, the drug is ideally taken one, two to four times daily. The tablets form should be taken with water while the markings in the calibrated dropper can be used for various doses and the concentrated oral form can be mixed with semisolid food or liquid and taken according to your doctor’s prescription. The tablet form should not be broken, crushed or chewed but swallowed as a whole with water.

Using Xanax-Blue Xanax Bar

The best way to use Xanax is by following your doctor or pharmacist prescription. The drug is used to treat panic disorder as well as anxiety disorder by acting on the central nervous system and the brain to produce the calming effect that reduces the impact of these conditions. Xanax is also known to treat panic disorder linked with agoraphobia or without it reducing the number of panic attacks that occur. Panic disorder is a medical condition where an individual experiences frequent panic attacks. These attacks are often characterized by the brief duration of discomfort or intense fear. Before using Xanax, ensure you are well-advised about the side effects, and when you notice the occurrence of any reaction, promptly contact your doctor.

Precautions-Blue Xanax Bar

Before using Xanax, do make sure you are aware of the side effects. If you are allergic to alprazolam or you have other allergies, discuss with your doctor before using Xanax because the drug may contain some inactive ingredients that may trigger certain conditions. For people that have acute narrow-angle glaucoma, you should not take Xanax. Taking the medication reduces your ability to focus because it makes you drowsy if you are debilitated or aged, as such do not drive, operate machinery or involve in activities that require your alertness. Using Xanax can be addictive and habit-forming, do not use it longer than the recommended duration of your doctor or take higher doses. If you have a drug abuse history or alcoholism, depression, Kidney or Liver problems, breathing problems such as Asthma or history of seizures or Epilepsy, ensure you tell your doctor before taking Xanax.

Side Effects

Using Xanax has some side effects; however, your doctor might have known that it will benefit your condition before prescribing it for you. If any of the side effects persist longer than expected or worsens, consult your doctor immediately. Your dosage may have to be reduced or the form you are using changed. Dizziness, drowsiness, increase production of saliva are some of the side effects that are known to be caused by Xanax. The side effects often occur when you start using the drug, and they go away in short periods, so there is nothing to wrong about. You can also manage some of the side effects such as light-headedness and dizziness by getting up slowly when standing up from a lying or seated position.

Using Xanax To Treat Anxiety

Most individuals prefer using Xanax to treat anxiety than using therapy because it is instrumental in alleviating the condition. It is more like an easy fix for anxiety for most people. Anxiety causes an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. When Alprazolam is taken, it works on the central nervous system and brain to create a sense of relaxation and calm; it also works as a muscle relaxant and a sedative. It works in the body by slowing down or reducing the effects of panic and anxiety; however, the brain becomes used to the presence of the drug over time which can reduce the functioning of the GABA receptor worst than it was before using Xanax.

  1. Ray Ball

“I was prescribed 2mg Xanax retard daily for hypertension 15 years ago. I have severe anxiety and panic attacks which started about the same time. At the moment, my panic attacks & anxiety have worsened. I now have 1mg xanax retard and if desperate, take another 1mg normal xanax. I feel guilty that I take them but I am sick of feeling tired, frightened and shaky. After reading the comments, I felt a lot better about taking xanax. I need to feel better and as someone said, hypertension meds are necessary every day but no-one says stop taking them.”

  2. Jenny Young

“The first time my doctor gave me xanax I thought this is the best! I started with 1mg per day, then 2, and then 3. It made me feel so calm and more happy. But I realized after how addictive it is. Now I take Xanax up to 6mg per day because I feel is the only thing that helps me not having anxiety and panic attacks. Sometimes I just enjoy how it makes me feel. It has been very effective but I also think is dangerous. Because I don’t care about the side effects but I am very scared of the thought of overdosing. I lie to people about how mg I take in a day. Take care of your self, if you have depression. It is easily to get addicted because it gives you that empty feeling you might find pleasant.”

  3. George Luma

“This medication has helped me live a normal life well more normal. I don’t worry much about nothing and I can go into Walmart and feel comfortable. My social life is improving as well. There were times I couldn’t get myself to interact with people sometimes I wouldn’t even answer the phone. I’ve only been on this medicine for a little over a month it has truly been a lifesaver. I am sleeping like a baby I can’t remember the last time I’ve struggled to calm down and go to sleep only to wake up several times a night using the bathroom or just couldn’t relax. My quality of life is getting much better.”

  4. Boris Mars

“Been on Xanax for almost 10 years. It has saved my life and I mean that. I couldn’t function from the severe anxiety that I would get everyday. I recently moved and my new psychiatrist won’t prescribe it to me. I am just thankful I still have 3 more scripts I can fill. He’s trying to get me off it by putting me on Buspar. What a mess this drug is. I can’t sleep and am nauseous all day long. Still take a low dose of my Xanax while on it but it scares me having to give up the only thing that has helped me over all theses years. People who abuse it have given it a horrible reputation and it’s not available for the responsible people that really need it.”

  5. Daniel

“This is crazy what they are currently putting me through to get off of this FANTASTIC drug. I was prescribed this drug at the age of 17 after my brother died. Everyone on my maternal side since my great grandmother had been on this drug. I have been on xanax since i was 17. I now can live a normal life, go to school, get FANTASTIC grades am a mother of 2. I love my daily life till my doctor passed away… now I can not find a doctor to prescribe it. I do not abuse this drug and they have no reason to want to take me off of this drug. I have been great success from this drug. I wish i could find a psychologist that would continue to prescribe this medication when it really works successfully for myself. It is not fare that doctors are pressured to not perscribe this medication for those who need it. I am never going to leave my house and its going to take a toll on my children as well. Its just unfair. If anyone knows a psychiatrist in Philadelphia suburbs please let me know.”

  6. Christopher M. Cunningham

For Panic Disorder: “Been on Xanax 4 years 1mg a day for intense panic attacks in the evening/night. Would wake up sweaty heart palpitating impending doom and vomiting nonstop. Also have CVS. Xanax worked great, also helped my TMJ. Never had to increase my dose in the 4 years I’ve been on it & never took more than the one pill a day I was prescribed. So tell me why now, all of the sudden my dr has taken me off of it?! After 3 days of not taking it I was twitching, vomiting, couldn’t hold down water, TMJ pain, intense migraine and tinnitus. Called dr & told him I have a 5 year old child, cannot be bedridden all day! He called in a script but only 15 pills half my normal dose & said he couldn’t give me anymore. His reasoning: “You’ve been on it too long and you shouldn’t need it anymore.” Xanax helps my panic attacks, TMJ, CVS, insomnia. Had given me my life back. No quality of life now. Guessing this is because of people who abuse them, they want to take people off who legit need it & don’t abuse it.”

  7. Beverly C. Benefield

For Anxiety: “Xanax has helped me immensely. It calms down these crazy, repetitive and intrusive thoughts of shame, worry and guilt that I otherwise find so hard to get rid of. I only have a quarter of a tablet on bad days as I don’t want to become dependent. But that seems to be enough. I would rather not take any but it just helps me to live a calm and happier life. I recommend them if you can be careful about dependence and only take occassionally.”

  8. Boris

“I am prescribed up to 4mg a day and usually take 2 to 3 mg a day. I can’t be given any SSRIs due to bad reactions on my maternal side of the family. Xanax just works for me. Was it overprescribed for years and given to people who had no business taking it? Yes. But this drug works wonders for some people. And it’s not placebo. Am I dependent? Yes. Is my quality of life better on them? Yes. They don’t make me sleepy or black out. In fact they give energy and on bad days motivation to get out of bed. I’m in good health, sleep 6 to 8 hours a day, and can interact with people better. Are they for everyone? NO. But they’ve helped me immensely.”

  9. Grace lee

“I don’t have panic or depression problems. I have sleeping problems. I fall asleep fine, but wake up around 2 AM and cannot go back to sleep because my mind is too active thinking about stupid stuff like movies, lawn mowers, hunting, visiting my grandkids, working on my car, music, planned projects, football, YOU NAME IT. I take Xanax when I wake up earky and can’t sleep. Xanax makes me go back to sleep almost immediately and I wake up around 6 AM feeling great. I have not noted any side effects, but I take it only when needed.”

  10. Sophia Woodard

“I have severe OCD, with accompanying anxiety and debilitating insomnia. Xanax helps me break thought loops. I only take it a few times per week, almost exclusively at night, and rarely during the day when I’m hit with a paralyzing bout of obsessional thought. I take .125 mg (half a .25mg pill). Surprisingly, that is enough to stop the ruminating and make me a little drowsy, and that adds up to falling asleep. Sometimes I take it in the middle of the night to get back to sleep, but only if I don’t have to get up early the next day and if I didn’t take it to get to sleep that night in the first place. The way I see it, if .125 to .25 mg stops working for me, it’ll be time to move on and maybe revisit Xanax at a later date. Having tried a great many different medications, I’m beginning to think rotating treatments is the way to go anyway, to prevent tolerance, addiction, and avoid long-term side effects/consequences.”

  11. Roland Hensley

“I had been on paroxetine (Paxil) on and off for 15 years which worked great for treating generalized anxiety, depression, obsessive thinking, self-esteem, socialability. Without medication I feel like I’m going crazy with the nonstop chatter in my brain and constant worry and doubt.I have achieved so much while on paroxetine, but it eventually pooped out on me on the highest dose. For 2 months I have tried Lexapro now and I feel like it is just making things worse, but when I take a 0.25 Xanax I feel a lot better and the anxiety and constant worry, butterflies in stomach, dreadful feeling about life dissipates. The cloud over me lifts and I can actually feel positive emotions again. They say the benefits of Xanax only last a few hours which is why they can be so addictive, but I feel relief for about 24 hours on the smallest dose. It is making this transition in finding a new long-term solution for my anxiety and depression at least bearable on the days that I really need relief.”

  12. Tabitha Little

“As far back as I can remember, kindergarten I think. I’ve suffered from major anxiety issues. I can remember throwing up in the trash can by the entrance to Jr. High School, and through High School even. I could then, and can now make my hands sweat just by thinking about it. When I finally got on Xanax, I was far more outgoing, funny, and learned there was a whole side to me I didn’t really know existed due to Anxiety. My point is…….don’t wait! Talk to some one who can help you with Anxiety if you have it. And BE HONEST! Tell them how hard it is for you!!”

  13. Lori D. Shilling

I’ve been on Xanax for the past two years, yes it can help you a lot as long as you take them as prescribe. Make sure you go to the gym, you eat healthy, dont gain weight and keep moving. Do not take more than prescribe you’ll see that it’s very helpful. or just go to healthcareshopy.com . me when in need.

  14. Penny R. Burke

For Panic Disorder: “Xanax has literally saved my life. After going to the hospital for a panic attack and seizure due to an overwhelming feeling of fear and worry, my psychiatrist prescribed 2mg once daily WHAT A DIFFERENCE. Listen, many people say it is an addictive drug…..which it can be if taken incorrectly…..however, if you have to take medicine for a heart condition, what is really the difference? The only people that don’t understand are the ones who have never suffered through a panic attack or had a moment of extreme anxiety – It can be very debilitating. I am grateful for this medication.”

  15. Arvid Santala

For Anxiety: “I have Poliaradiculoneuropathy (when polyneuropathy and polyradiculopathy occur together). Xanax is not so great for general anxiety, but I appreciate this drug, since I discovered its off label use for my terrible neuropathy. It reduces my legs pain and stiffness by ca. 70% and set me free from being bedridden. Now I can walk several km with the help of crutches and feel more like human again. I am getting addicted to it, but I could care less.”

  16. Luz N. Musso

“I get intense panic attacks. Xanax is very effective at working quickly to stop a panic attack. It saved my life, until after a few months I tried to stop taking it and got horrible withdrawals. I felt like I was dying, my anxiety was worse than it had ever been in my life, high blood pressure (and mine is naturally low), tachycardia, hallucinations, tremors. I hope anyone considering taking Xanax takes it at a low dose and not daily. If daily, do not quit cold turkey. ”THNAKS DIANA WOOD.

  17. Erica J. Jobe

“Xanax has helped me tremendously, I do not suffer from any of the side effects that are listed. Since being on this drug for my anxiety, I have been given part of my life back. I didn’t like to be in crowds of people or go to social events and since I am on this medicine I no longer suffer from these anxieties.”

  18. Susan S. Waddle

This is the best medicine out there. It makes me a better person. I love it. I have anxiety and depression and this is the only thing that makes me tolerable to be around.

  19. Ruth T. Kearney

I take Xanax only as needed for Panic Attacks. It helps to know that I only have to “hang on” for 15 minutes or so and then it will kick in and work well. I am thrilled with it and don’t know what I would do if it wasn’t available.I LOVE XANAX.

  20. Peggy A. Johnson

This is the ONLY drug that works for me and I feel I need to get off of it. Scared and torn and would love a solution.

  21. Philipp Reiniger

Xanax is so mild, I experience little to no side effects with it. It stops my panic attacks and helps tremendously with my anxiety – it also helps with my depression.

  22. Jean H. Roberson

Take the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not take two doses at one time.

  23. Bonnie L. Speidel

Alprazolam interacts with alcohol and medications (for example, barbiturates, and narcotics) that suppress activity in the brain by suppressing activity more and causing sedation.
